A small airplane carrying five people, crashed and caught fire in a parking lot near a retirement community in Pennsylvania on Sunday afternoon. Amazingly, everyone on board survived.

The crash happened around 3 p.m. near Lancaster Airport in Manheim Township, according to Police Chief Duane Fisher. All five passengers were taken to the hospital, but their conditions are not yet known. No one on the ground was injured.

Witnesses Describe the Crash

Brian Pipkin, who was driving nearby, saw the plane climbing before it suddenly turned left and nosedived.

“It went down straight, and there was an immediate fireball,” Pipkin told reporters.

He quickly called 911 and rushed to the scene. He recorded a video showing thick black smoke, burning cars, and the plane’s wreckage. He said the plane narrowly missed a three-story building at Brethren Village, a retirement community about 75 miles west of Philadelphia.

Firefighters from the nearby airport arrived within minutes, followed by more emergency responders.

“It was so smoky and hot. They were struggling to put the fire out,” Pipkin said

Damage and Investigation

About a dozen parked cars were damaged, and residents of Brethren Village were asked to stay inside for safety.

Chief Fisher said it was incredible that no one on the ground was hurt.

“I don’t know if I’d call it a miracle, but it’s amazing that everyone survived,” he said.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the plane was a Beechcraft Bonanza and had five people on board. Details about its flight plan were not immediately available.

What Happened Before the Crash?

Air traffic control recordings revealed that the pilot reported a problem with an open door and asked to return to the airport. An air traffic controller told the pilot they were cleared to land but then urgently said, “Pull up!” Moments later, someone reported that the plane had crashed in a parking lot.

Governor Responds

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said state police were assisting in the response. He assured that all state resources are available to help and that more updates will be shared soon.

This crash comes just a month after a deadly air ambulance crash in Philadelphia killed seven people.
