
President Droupadi Murmu will travel to Vatican City to attend the state funeral of Pope Francis. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that she will make a two-day visit from April 25 to April 26, 2025.
President Murmu will represent the people and government of India at the funeral and express condolences. Pope Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday at the age of 88, was the first non-European Pope in nearly 1,300 years.

On April 25, President Murmu will lay a wreath in honor of Pope Francis at the Basilica of Saint Peter in Vatican City. On April 26, she will attend the funeral mass at Saint Peter’s Square, where dignitaries from all over the world will gather to pay their respects.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sadness over Pope Francis’s death, remembering his deep love for the people of India. Earlier, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh had visited the Holy See’s Embassy in New Delhi and signed the condolence book.
In honor of Pope Francis, India declared three days of state mourning.
