Imagine flying from Sydney to New York or London without a single stop—Qantas is turning this dream into reality by 2027!

The Big Announcement

Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson revealed that the airline’s ambitious Project Sunrise will finally take off in early 2027. The first of 12 specially designed Airbus A350-1000 jets will arrive by the end of 2026, marking a new era in ultra-long-haul travel.

Originally, the project faced a hiccup when European regulators asked Airbus to redesign a fuel tank for safety. Now, with adjustments underway, Qantas is gearing up for local certification flights and crew training to ensure smooth operations.

The Plan: Daily Flights to New York and London

Hudson shared that three aircraft will be enough to launch daily non-stop flights from Sydney to either New York or London. As more planes arrive, Qantas will expand its network, though other routes remain under wraps for now.

Heathrow Chaos: A Costly Setback

On the sidelines of an Airbus event, Hudson also addressed the recent Heathrow airport shutdown due to a fire. Qantas had to divert two flights to Paris and bus passengers to London—a costly ordeal. While some airlines consider legal action, Qantas hasn’t joined the fray, calling such incidents “incredibly expensive.”
