Public sector banks (PSU banks) are back in the spotlight. On July 16, PSU bank stocks saw a strong rally. The Nifty PSU Bank index jumped more than 1.5%. This happened even as the overall market was quiet.
What sparked the rally? Reports say the central government is planning a fresh round of reforms in the banking sector. These reforms could change how PSU banks work, grow, and attract investors.

Another major move in the works is raising the foreign ownership limit. Currently, foreign investors can own up to 20% in PSU banks. The government may allow a higher limit. If this happens, it could bring more global investors to India’s public banks. That means more money, better stability, and stronger market trust.

But that’s not all. Sources also say that the Centre is thinking about allowing large companies to enter the banking space. However, this would come with strict rules. For example, companies may not be allowed to use bank funds for their own needs. There may also be limits on how much they can own in a bank. Big NBFCs (non-banking financial companies) may be allowed to become full commercial banks.
As of now, some PSU banks like UCO Bank, Punjab & Sind Bank, Indian Overseas Bank, and Central Bank of India still have more than 90% government ownership. This could also change under new reforms, as the Centre wants these banks to be more market-driven.
These steps are not small. They signal a big shift in how the government sees banking. It’s not just about running banks — it’s about making them compete, grow, and become global-ready.
Investors are watching closely. So are employees, foreign funds, and even startups. PSU banks may no longer just be old-school government entities. They could become India’s next big financial powerhouses.
This rally isn’t just a market move. It’s a sign that India’s banking story is about to change — and this time, PSU banks might lead the way.
