The Puri Rath Yatra, one of India’s holiest festivals, turned into a medical emergency this Friday. Over 600 pilgrims fell ill as intense heat and extreme crowd pressure overwhelmed the sacred town of Puri, Odisha.

What was supposed to be a day of devotion quickly spiraled into distress.

Heat, Humidity & Havoc

The Odisha Health and Family Welfare Minister Mukesh Mahaling confirmed that the primary cause of the mass illness was the scorching heat and high humidity. The situation worsened with overcrowding, making it difficult for many to breathe or even move.

According to Dr. Kishore Satapathy, the Puri Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO), several people suffered vomiting, minor injuries, and fainting spells. Most were treated at OPDs and later discharged. Thankfully, there were no casualties.

But around 70 people were admitted to the District Headquarters Hospital in Puri. Nine are still in critical condition, as reported by officials.

Crowd Crush Near Balagandi

The crisis hit a breaking point when Lord Balabhadra’s chariot, Taladhwaja, got stuck near Balagandi for over an hour. This sudden halt led to a massive crowd build-up, causing panic.

“People got trapped while trying to escape the congested area. Several sustained injuries,” a senior official said.

Volunteers from government and private organisations acted quickly, shifting the injured to nearby hospitals.

Political Voices Speak Out

Former Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his concern:

“We aren’t here to blame the administration, but it’s impossible not to voice our deep anguish over what happened during the most sacred event of our State.”

He referred to the delay in pulling the Nandighosha chariot, which many believe led to mismanagement and chaos.

Time to Rethink Crowd Management?

The Puri Rath Yatra draws lakhs of devotees every year. But this year’s incident raises serious questions about planning and safety.

For a festival this grand, can we afford to repeat these mistakes? Faith doesn’t mean people should fall sick just to get a glimpse of the divine.

The event may be spiritual, but it also demands smart logistics, heat action plans, and real-time crowd control.
