Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the Kursk region in western Russia for the first time since Russian forces removed Ukrainian troops from there last month.

The Kremlin said that during his visit on Tuesday, Putin met with volunteer groups and also visited the Kursk-II nuclear power plant.

Russian state TV showed Putin meeting volunteers and local leaders, including the acting governor, Alexander Khinshtein. Putin was accompanied by Sergei Kiriyenko, a senior Kremlin official.

At the end of April, Russia said it had pushed Ukrainian troops out of the Kursk region, stopping the largest attack on Russian soil since World War Two.

About two years after Russia started its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Ukraine launched its strongest attack on August 6, breaking through the Russian border into Kursk with the help of many drones and powerful Western weapons.

At one point, Ukrainian forces controlled almost 1,400 square kilometers of the Kursk region.
