Rajiv Gandhi was India’s Prime Minister from 1984 to 1989. He led the last Congress government with a full majority in Parliament.

He became Prime Minister at the age of 40, after his mother, Indira Gandhi, was assassinated in 1984. He was the youngest Prime Minister in India’s history.

Rajiv Gandhi was killed in a bomb blast by the LTTE, a terrorist group from Sri Lanka, on May 21, 1991, while he was campaigning in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu.

Today, his son Rahul Gandhi is the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
