It’s official now — Rajkummar Rao will play Sourav Ganguly in his much-awaited biopic. After months of speculation, the actor has confirmed the big news himself.
In an interview with NDTV, Rajkummar said, “Now that Dada has already said it, let me also make it official — yes, I am playing him in his biopic. I’m nervous… It’s a huge responsibility.”

The announcement has created a huge buzz across the country. Cricket and cinema are two things that truly unite India, and when they come together, the energy is unmatched.
A Long-Awaited Dream
Fans have been waiting for a Sourav Ganguly biopic for years. After the success of films like MS Dhoni: The Untold Story and 83, it was only a matter of time before Dada’s story made it to the big screen.
In a recent chat with PTI, Ganguly said, “It’s going well. It will release next December. Shooting starts in January. The script and pre-production take time, but shooting will only take about three months.”
This means fans can expect the film to hit theatres by the end of 2025.
Why Rajkummar Rao?
Rajkummar Rao’s casting has been a topic of debate. Names like Ranbir Kapoor and Ayushmann Khurrana were also in the mix. But it was Ganguly’s subtle endorsement of Rao that sealed the deal.
And honestly, it makes sense. Rajkummar has the range, the grit, and the heart to pull off such a big role. He’s not just a good actor — he’s a shape-shifter.
Coming off his recent cricket-based drama Mr. & Mrs. Mahi, he already has a feel for the sport on screen. He’s also promoting his next film Maalik, set to release on July 11.
What’s Next?
The film will begin shooting in January 2026. Post-production is expected to take a few months, with a December release planned. The project promises to cover Ganguly’s rise from a young cricketer to a national icon — and everything in between.
For now, we wait. But one thing’s clear: Rajkummar Rao is all in. And if his past performances are anything to go by, this one is going to be worth the hype.
