The Controversial Incident
Popular YouTuber and podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia, known as BeerBiceps, sparked nationwide outrage after asking a contestant on Samay Raina’s comedy show India’s Got Latent a shocking question: “Would you rather watch your parents have s** every day for the rest of your life or join in once and stop it forever?” The remark, intended as a roast, was met with immediate condemnation for its explicit and incestuous undertones, surprising even host Samay Raina, who reacted with disbelief.

The episode, which aired on YouTube over the weekend, quickly went viral, drawing criticism from politicians, celebrities, and social media users. Many labeled the comment as “perverse,” “deranged,” and a violation of societal norms.

Ranveer’s Apology: “Comedy Is Not My Forte”
Facing intense backlash, Allahbadia issued a public apology on February 10 via a video posted on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram. In the 52-second clip, he admitted to a “lapse in judgment” and acknowledged his comment was neither appropriate nor humorous. “Family is the last thing I would ever disrespect,” he emphasized, vowing to use his platform more responsibly. He also requested the show’s producers to remove the offensive segment.

Despite his remorse, the apology was met with skepticism. Netizens accused him of insincerity, calling it a “damage control” tactic to salvage his brand and sponsorships. Critics highlighted his history of controversial remarks, including past jokes about women’s clothing and unverified claims about Kerala’s Malappuram district.

Legal Repercussions and FIRs
The controversy escalated legally, with police complaints filed in Mumbai and Guwahati under Sections 294 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and 67 of the IT Act, which penalize obscenity. The Assam Police registered an FIR against Allahbadia, Raina, and other panelists, including influencers Ashish Chanchlani and Apoorva Mukhija (The Rebel Kid), for “promoting obscenity”.

Maharashtra Cyber Police launched an investigation into all 18 episodes of India’s Got Latent, scrutinizing alleged profanity. Mumbai Police also visited Allahbadia’s residence and the show’s studio, while the National Commission for Women (NCW) summoned the creators for questioning.

Public Figures Weigh In

  • Political Reactions: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stressed that freedom of speech “ends when it encroaches on others’ dignity,” hinting at legal action.
  • Celebrity Criticism: Singer Mika Singh condemned the show’s “shocking” language, while lyricist Manoj Muntashir warned against normalizing vulgarity46. Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate labeled the content “pervert,” urging society not to glorify such behavior.
  • Industry Backlash: The All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) demanded a ban on the show, urging artists to boycott those involved.

Broader Implications and Fallout

  • Content Removal: YouTube removed the episode following a government notice, with the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting citing legal violations.
  • Brand Impact: Allahbadia reportedly lost 8,000 followers and faced canceled collaborations, including with musician B Praak.
  • Historical Parallels: The incident drew comparisons to the 2015 AIB Knockout controversy, reigniting debates about censorship and creative freedom in digital content.

Conclusion: A Wake-Up Call for Content Creators?
The backlash against Ranveer Allahbadia underscores the growing scrutiny of digital creators’ accountability. While humor often pushes boundaries, this incident highlights the fine line between edgy content and societal norms. As legal proceedings unfold, the controversy serves as a cautionary tale for influencers to balance creativity with responsibility—especially in a country where cultural sensitivities remain paramount.
