Reliance Power has signed an important agreement with Green Digital (GDL), a company owned by Druk Holding and Investments (DHI) – the investment arm of the Royal Government of Bhutan. This agreement is for a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to develop a major solar power project in Bhutan. The aim is to boost clean energy and improve energy cooperation in South Asia.

Reliance Power and DHI will work together to build Bhutan’s largest solar power plant, with a total capacity of 500 megawatts (MW). Both companies will have an equal share (50:50) in the project. The project will cost up to ₹2,000 crore and will follow the Build-Own-Operate (BOO) model. This will be the biggest private foreign investment in Bhutan’s solar energy sector so far.

Reliance Power is focusing on investing in clean energy projects that have long-term benefits. The company has already started the tendering process for engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC). It will follow global standards to ensure the project is done efficiently and cost-effectively. It is also working with top financial institutions to arrange funds in a way that is sustainable and affordable.

This project shows Reliance Group’s strong commitment to renewable energy and to building better economic ties between India and Bhutan. Reliance Power currently has a clean energy development pipeline of 2.5 gigawatts (GW) in solar power and over 2.5 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in battery storage systems, making it the biggest player in India’s Solar + BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) sector.

Earlier in October 2024, Reliance Enterprises (a joint venture of Reliance Power and Reliance Infrastructure) had signed a broader agreement with DHI to develop both solar and hydropower projects in Bhutan. This included the 500 MW solar project and the long-term operation of the 770 MW Chamkharchhu-I hydroelectric project, which supports Bhutan’s energy goals.

This partnership marks a big step toward a greener future and stronger India-Bhutan collaboration in the energy sector.
