Rishabh Pant created history on Thursday during the fourth Test between India and England at Old Trafford. Despite a foot injury, Pant became India’s highest run-scorer in the World Test Championship (WTC), breaking Rohit Sharma’s record of 2716 runs.
Pant, 27, achieved this in just 38 WTC matches, needing only 40 runs to surpass Rohit’s mark. He reached the milestone during India’s first innings on Day 2 of the match. So far in his WTC career, Pant has scored six centuries and 15 half-centuries, with an impressive batting average of 43.80.

Just a day before, Pant also became the first non-English wicketkeeper-batter to score 1000 Test runs in England.
Here are the current top 3 Indian scorers in WTC:
- Rishabh Pant – 2717* runs (38 matches)
- Rohit Sharma – 2716 runs (40 matches)
- Virat Kohli – 2617 runs (46 matches)
Other Indian players doing well in WTC include Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, and Yashasvi Jaiswal, all averaging above 40.
If Pant scores 64 more runs in this match, he will join legends like Sunil Gavaskar, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and KL Rahul by scoring 1000 Test runs in England against the English team.
Injury Update:
Pant injured his right foot while batting on Day 1. Because of this, he won’t be keeping wickets for the rest of the match. The BCCI confirmed that Dhruv Jurel will take over wicketkeeping duties. However, Pant is still available to bat if needed.

Interestingly, this is not the first time Pant has faced an injury. In the previous Test match, he had a finger injury and could keep wickets for only 34 overs, after which Jurel stepped in.
