Federer, who won the Shanghai Masters twice, last visited Shanghai in 2024. During that visit, he spent time exploring the city, met Novak Djokovic, watched Jannik Sinner play, and even trained indoors with Carlos Alcaraz. He joked about why he was training with Alcaraz.
Federer has played in Shanghai eight times and won 23 matches, losing 6. He first played there in 2010 and beat Novak Djokovic but lost to Andy Murray in the final. In 2012, he lost to Murray again in the semi-finals.
In 2014, Federer won his first Shanghai Masters by beating Djokovic and Gilles Simon. He lost early in 2015 but came back in 2017 to win his second Shanghai title by defeating Juan Martin del Potro and Rafael Nadal.

After that, his results were mixed. He lost in the semi-finals in 2018 and the quarter-finals in 2019, which was his last competitive match at Shanghai.
Last year, fans welcomed Federer warmly in Shanghai. In just two months, they will get to see him play again at one of his favorite tennis places.
