India’s upcoming Test series against England is more than just cricket—it marks a new chapter. Rohit Sharma, the former captain, personally requested Gautam Gambhir to reappoint fielding coach T Dilip, and the BCCI agreed, according to reports.

The five-match Test series begins on June 20 in Leeds.

It’s the start of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle. This series is special because it is India’s first without Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both retired from Tests. Shubman Gill now leads the team, stepping into big shoes.

Before Rohit and Virat retired, the BCCI made big changes in the support staff. Assistant coach Abhishek Nayar and fielding coach T Dilip were let go.

The plan was to bring in a foreign fielding coach, with names like Ryan ten Doeschate in mind. But things didn’t go as planned.

The BCCI struggled to find the right foreign coach quickly. That’s when Rohit Sharma stepped in. He made a special request to head coach Gautam Gambhir to bring T Dilip back for at least one more year. Rohit’s influence shows how much he cares about the team’s comfort and continuity.

T Dilip’s previous term was well-liked.

He introduced fun ideas, like giving medals for the best fielder each match day. These small touches boosted team spirit and made fielding more exciting.

Meanwhile, Shubman Gill and B Sai Sudharsan might miss India A’s upcoming game against England Lions. Both play for Gujarat Titans in the IPL, and if their team makes the final on June 3, joining the India A side by June 6 will be tough.

They will also have to switch from IPL’s T20 format to red-ball cricket quickly—no easy feat.

For fans and followers, Rohit Sharma’s role off the field shows he is still very much a leader. His personal intervention helped the team keep a trusted coach, avoiding last-minute chaos.

In the big picture, this move reflects the importance of stability in a team facing big changes. As India moves into a new era, having familiar faces like T Dilip in support roles can make a huge difference.
