The Indian version of The Traitors, hosted by Karan Johar, is coming to Prime Video on June 9. But if social media reactions are anything to go by, audiences aren’t exactly lining up with popcorn.
The trailer dropped Friday on Instagram—and what followed was a wave of criticism. From comments mocking the show’s concept to users calling it a “bastardisation” of classic Indian games, the internet had opinions, and they weren’t pretty.

What’s The Traitors About?
It’s the Indian adaptation of a hit international reality format.
Twenty contestants. One grand palace. A game built on trust—and betrayal.
Some contestants are secretly chosen as “Traitors” by Karan Johar. The rest are Innocents. Each night, the Traitors quietly eliminate one Innocent. By day, everyone competes in challenges to win prize money. At the end of each day, there’s a group vote to try and identify—and banish—the Traitors.
If the Innocents catch all the Traitors, they split the prize. But if even one Traitor survives till the end, they take it all.

Basically, a cocktail of TV, drama, and internet fame.

Why the Backlash?
Many viewers aren’t buying it. The internet feels oversaturated with influencer-heavy, overproduced content. And with Karan Johar at the helm, the skepticism only grew.
“Same thing, old wine in a new bottle,” wrote one user.
“Why is this even being released?” asked another.
One Instagrammer called it, “The destruction of whatever values are left in Indian society.”
Another sharp comment compared it to “Raja Mantri Chor Sipahi… but make it cringe.”
Many feel disconnected from shows that cater more to shock value than substance.
And Karan Johar? He’s no stranger to criticism. But this time, the trolling feels less playful and more pointed.
The Bigger Picture
Indian OTT is booming. But not every shiny package lands. The Traitors may grab views because of its cast and controversy—but whether it earns respect is another story.
