A Russian general was killed in a car explosion on Friday, just outside Moscow, according to Russia’s main criminal investigation agency. This marks the second time in four months that a senior Russian officer has been killed in such a way.
The Russian Investigative Committee confirmed that Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik, who was a deputy head in the Russian army’s General Staff, died after an explosive device was placed in his car in Balashikha, a town near Moscow.

A Russian spokesperson, Svetlana Petrenko, said the bomb was filled with shrapnel, and investigators are currently examining the scene. Russian news channels showed videos of the burning car in a residential area. Fragments of the bomb were found at the scene and are being tested.

So far, no suspects have been named.
Maria Zakharova, a spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, called the attack a “terrorist act” and condemned it. She added that the main question right now is how to end the war in Europe, with many victims every day, including a Russian soldier killed in a terrorist attack in Moscow that same day.

This bombing follows another one in December that killed Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, who led Russia’s Radiation, Biological, and Chemical Protection Forces. Ukraine later claimed responsibility for that attack, which also killed Kirillov’s assistant.
The explosion occurred just as US envoy Steve Witkoff was expected to visit Moscow to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin about a US-brokered peace plan for Ukraine. This would be their fourth meeting since February.
