The RG Kar rape and murder case, which shook the nation, reached a significant milestone on January 20, 2025, when the Sealdah Court in Kolkata sentenced Sanjay Roy, the primary accused, to life imprisonment until death. This verdict marked the culmination of a harrowing legal battle that began with the brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old post-graduate trainee (PGT) doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024. The case not only highlighted the vulnerabilities within institutional security but also sparked nationwide protests demanding justice for the victim and systemic reforms.

The Crime That Shocked the Nation

The victim, a young doctor on night duty, was found dead in the seminar room of the hospital. The crime, characterized by its brutality, sent shockwaves across the country, leading to widespread protests by medical professionals and citizens alike. The initial investigation by the Kolkata Police led to the arrest of Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, within 24 hours of the crime. However, due to allegations of evidence tampering and procedural lapses, the Calcutta High Court transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) five days later.

The Trial and Conviction

The trial, which began on November 11, 2024, saw the examination of 50 witnesses and the presentation of forensic evidence, including DNA samples and CCTV footage, which conclusively linked Roy to the crime. The CBI argued that the case fell under the “rarest of rare” category, warranting the death penalty. However, Roy maintained his innocence throughout the trial, claiming he was “falsely implicated” and alleging the involvement of an IPS officer.

On January 18, 2025, the court convicted Roy under Sections 64 (rape), 66 (causing death), and 103(1) (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The judge, Anirban Das, noted that while the crime was heinous, it did not meet the threshold for the “rarest of rare” classification, thus ruling out the death penalty. Instead, Roy was sentenced to life imprisonment until death, along with a fine of ₹50,000. Additionally, the court ordered the West Bengal government to compensate the victim’s family with ₹17 lakhs.

Reactions to the Verdict

The verdict elicited mixed reactions. While the victim’s family expressed relief at the conviction, they remained dissatisfied with the investigation, alleging that other perpetrators were still at large. The father of the deceased doctor stated, “We want the highest punishment, and that should be the death sentence. We know we can never bring our daughter back”.

Roy’s family, on the other hand, accepted the verdict. His 70-year-old mother, Malati Roy, remarked, “If the court decides to hang him to death, I don’t have any objection as his crime has been proved in the eye of the law. I will cry alone but accept it as a quirk of fate”.

Broader Implications and Unanswered Questions

The case raised critical questions about institutional accountability and the safety of women in public spaces.

The verdict, while delivering justice to the victim, also underscored the need for systemic reforms to prevent such crimes in the future. The medical community and civil society continue to demand accountability from those who may have facilitated or covered up the crime.

Conclusion

The sentencing of Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment marks a significant step toward justice in the RG Kar rape and murder case. However, the fight for accountability and systemic change is far from over. As the nation reflects on this tragic incident, it is imperative to address the underlying issues of institutional negligence and gender-based violence to ensure that such atrocities are never repeated.

The RG Kar case will remain a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities within our systems and the collective responsibility to safeguard the rights and dignity of every individual.
