The evolving Saudi Kashmir stance has begun to reshape the geopolitical landscape of South Asia, quietly altering the power balance between India, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia. Historically, Pakistan could rely on Saudi Arabia’s unwavering support for its position on Kashmir. However, recent shifts suggest a more nuanced approach, one that may ultimately benefit India while frustrating Pakistan.

A New Chapter in Saudi Foreign Policy

Saudi Arabia’s foreign policy has traditionally been guided by its close relationships with allies, particularly Pakistan. But under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Kingdom’s approach to international relations has evolved.

Driven by a mix of economic needs, regional stability concerns, and its ambition to lead the Muslim world, Saudi Arabia is becoming more pragmatic in its foreign policy decisions.

In particular, when it comes to Kashmir, Saudi Arabia has opted for a more neutral stance, stepping away from its once-automatic support for Pakistan’s position.

This shift is not just about geopolitical maneuvering. It’s about economic pragmatism. Saudi Arabia, diversifying its economy away from oil dependency, is increasingly looking to India as a major economic partner.

India’s booming economy offers Saudi Arabia new investment opportunities, which are hard to ignore. Moreover, both countries have found common ground in counter-terrorism cooperation, which further cements their growing strategic partnership.

How Saudi’s New Stance Benefits India

For India, Saudi Arabia’s softer position on Kashmir represents a diplomatic win. The once-expected vocal support from Saudi Arabia in international forums like the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) is no longer guaranteed. While this might sound subtle, the shift has major implications.

1. Reduced International Pressure

Saudi Arabia’s reluctance to take a firm stance on Kashmir means India faces less pressure from the OIC and other international bodies. This gives India more breathing room on the world stage to pursue its own diplomatic interests without the looming shadow of condemnation from its former ally.

2. Improved Diplomatic Leverage

The reduction in vocal criticism from Saudi Arabia also gives India more diplomatic leverage in dealing with other countries on the Kashmir issue. India can now engage in discussions without the immediate expectation of facing Saudi-led rebukes, which were once common.

3. Strengthened Bilateral Ties

India’s relationship with Saudi Arabia has been steadily growing, and this shift in stance further strengthens those ties. A positive trajectory in diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia enhances India’s overall global standing and positions it as a more influential player in the region.

The Growing Frustration in Pakistan

On the other hand, Pakistan’s frustration with Saudi Arabia’s evolving stance is palpable. Pakistan has long relied on Saudi Arabia’s support in international forums to back its position on Kashmir. The shift in Saudi policy has been a blow to Pakistan, creating a sense of diplomatic abandonment.

1. A Perception of Abandonment

In Pakistan, there is growing concern that Saudi Arabia is prioritizing its economic interests over traditional alliances. This shift may signal a diminishing of the old order, where Pakistan could count on Saudi backing on critical issues.

2. Reduced Diplomatic Support

With Saudi Arabia softening its position, Pakistan now finds itself isolated on the Kashmir issue, especially in international discussions where Saudi Arabia once played a pivotal role in advocating for Pakistan’s stance.

3. Strain on Bilateral Ties

As Saudi Arabia tilts towards India, Pakistan’s diplomatic relations with the Kingdom are experiencing strain. Although it’s unlikely that Saudi Arabia will sever its ties with Pakistan, the changing dynamics have certainly added pressure to this once-stable relationship.

What’s Next for South Asia?

While Saudi Arabia is unlikely to completely abandon its historical ties with Pakistan, its approach to Kashmir has undeniably changed. The Kingdom now emphasizes dialogue and de-escalation rather than taking sides, a shift that could redefine South Asia’s geopolitical environment.

India’s rising economic and diplomatic influence is playing a key role in this transformation. Saudi Arabia’s nuanced stance on Kashmir is just one example of how global power dynamics are shifting.

As the world becomes more interconnected, strategic partnerships are increasingly driven by shared interests rather than longstanding alliances. The Saudi Kashmir stance exemplifies this ongoing transformation and highlights the evolving nature of international relations in the region.
