It’s official. LG’s smartphone update servers are going dark. For those still rocking an LG phone, the news might sting a little—especially since LG’s departure from the smartphone game in 2021.

While they continued providing updates for existing devices, the time has come to end that support.

By June 2025, LG will shut down its update servers, leaving many LG smartphone users in the lurch. Here’s what this means for you—and what your next steps might be.

The End of an Era: LG’s Smartphone Journey

For a lot of us, LG smartphones were a breath of fresh air. From the quirky LG G Flex with its curved display to the modular LG G5 that let you swap out parts like a Lego set, LG was always willing to take risks.

Sure, they didn’t always succeed, but their bold ideas were unforgettable.

In 2021, LG decided to bow out of the fiercely competitive smartphone market, citing struggles to keep up with the big players. While it was a blow to many loyal users, LG promised continued software support for existing devices. But now, with the update servers shutting down, that promise is about to be broken.

What Does the Server Shutdown Mean for Your LG Phone?

If you’re still using an LG smartphone, here’s what you can expect:

No More Updates

After June 2025, you can forget about receiving any software updates—no new features, no bug fixes, and most importantly, no security patches. While this might not sound like a huge deal now, it’s a ticking time bomb for your phone’s security.

Security Risks on the Horizon

The biggest concern? Without security updates, your phone will become an easy target for hackers. As Android evolves, new threats emerge. Without patches to protect your device, it’s only a matter of time before your LG phone becomes vulnerable to malware, phishing attacks, and other security breaches.

App Compatibility Issues

As apps get updated to work with the latest versions of Android, your older LG phone may start to struggle. Some apps might stop working altogether, while others could experience performance issues. Apps that rely on newer Android features will likely crash or fail to function properly.

Slower Performance

Over time, your phone could slow down. Without ongoing software optimizations, performance may degrade. Apps could crash, your phone might freeze, and you’ll start to notice that things aren’t running as smoothly as before.

What Can You Do? Options to Consider

So, what can you do about this? Fortunately, you have options:

Back Up Your Data

This is the first and most crucial step. Make sure all your important data—photos, contacts, documents, and videos—are backed up. You don’t want to lose your memories just because your phone’s software has been left to rot. Use cloud storage or a computer to keep everything safe.

Be Extra Cautious Online

Without security patches, your phone is more vulnerable to online threats. Be cautious about what you download and where you click. Avoid suspicious websites and apps, and always check the source before installing anything on your phone.

Try Custom ROMs (Only If You’re Tech-Savvy)

If you’re comfortable with a little technical know-how, you could install a custom ROM—a version of Android that’s updated by the community. However, this is not for the faint of heart. It’s an advanced process, and if done wrong, you could end up turning your phone into a pricey paperweight. Be sure to use reputable sources if you decide to go down this route.

Upgrade Your Phone

This is likely the most practical solution. If your phone is getting long in the tooth, consider upgrading to a newer model that will receive continued support. It might be time to say goodbye to your LG phone and say hello to a device that will continue to be updated and secure for years to come.

The Road Ahead: A Shift in Perspective

The shutdown of LG’s update servers serves as a stark reminder that technology doesn’t last forever. Devices, no matter how innovative, eventually age out. While it’s sad to see LG’s support for its smartphones end, it’s also an opportunity to reassess your tech needs and make an informed decision about your next phone. And who knows? Maybe your next phone will be packed with even more innovative features than the quirky LG devices we all remember.

For now, LG smartphone users will have to make a decision—stick with an unsupported phone, take steps to mitigate risks, or jump to a newer device with continued software support. The choice is yours.
