Businessman and polo player Sunjay Kapur died in London on June 12, in a freak incident during a match. He was 54. A bee flew into his mouth while he was playing polo at the prestigious Guards Polo Club. This led to a blocked windpipe and eventually triggered a heart attack, according to reports.
Kapur was part of team Aureus, which he also supported financially. The match was against hotelier Jaisal Singh’s team, Sujan. Witnesses say he began feeling uncomfortable and asked to stop playing. Minutes later, he collapsed on the sidelines.

A viral video, shared by his close friend Ajit Nandal, shows the shocking final moments. In the video, Kapur is seen lying motionless as rescue teams and medics perform CPR. Despite quick efforts, they couldn’t revive him on the field.

The news stunned both business and Bollywood circles. Kapur, who was earlier married to actress Karisma Kapoor, shared two children with her — Samaira and Kiaan. His funeral was held in Delhi on June 19, with Karisma, their kids, and several celebrities like Kareena Kapoor Khan and Saif Ali Khan attending.
Sunjay had remarried in 2017 to Priya Sachdev, and the couple had a son, Azarias. His first wife was fashion designer Nandita Mahtani. The businessman had quite a journey through personal highs and lows, but his passion for polo remained constant.
The exact cause of death was confirmed by his company, which released a brief statement citing a heart attack but avoiding further details. However, business consultant Suhel Seth confirmed that the bee sting and the resulting airway blockage led to the heart attack.
Due to legal delays linked to Sunjay’s US citizenship, his body couldn’t be flown to India immediately. His father-in-law, Ashok Sachdev, explained that formalities took time before the body could be released for the final rites.
This tragic event has now raised awareness about rare but dangerous allergic reactions and accidents during sports events. It’s also a painful reminder that life can change in seconds — and not even the rich or powerful are immune.
Sunjay Kapur’s death left behind a legacy of business success, elite polo, and Bollywood connection — but most importantly, a grieving family and countless friends.
