In a rare and honest interview, Tesla co-founder Martin Eberhard has openly criticized Elon Musk’s recent decisions at Tesla. Speaking with YouTuber Kim Java, Eberhard shared strong opinions about the company’s direction and Musk’s leadership.

Cybertruck vs Affordable EVs
Eberhard strongly disapproved of Tesla’s decision to cancel plans for an affordable $25,000 electric car, saying the world needs cheaper electric vehicles — not expensive trucks like the Cybertruck. He called the Cybertruck a “dumpster” and criticized its unusual design and high price, saying it goes against Tesla’s original goal of making EVs accessible to everyone.
Doubts About Self-Driving Cars
He also questioned Tesla’s push for self-driving technology. Eberhard said he’s very skeptical about the company’s Robotaxi plans and worried about safety issues, especially after some accidents involving Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system. He believes Tesla is taking too many risks and that there isn’t enough government regulation.
A Long History of Tension with Musk
Eberhard and Musk have had a rocky relationship for years. Eberhard left Tesla in 2007 and later settled a lawsuit with Musk. He said Musk still sometimes attacks him publicly, even during big events or on social media. “Someone said I’m still living rent-free in his head,” Eberhard joked.
Still a Shareholder, But Now More Vocal
Although Eberhard is no longer part of the company’s leadership, he still owns Tesla shares. In the past, he supported the company’s mission, but in this latest interview, he clearly disagreed with the current direction, especially regarding product choices and safety.

Tesla Facing Tough Times
Eberhard’s comments come when Tesla is already struggling. The company is seeing lower sales in key markets, criticism over pricing, and big losses from cryptocurrency investments. Musk also recently lost $12 billion in one day due to market drops. Eberhard’s criticism adds to the growing concern that Tesla might be moving away from its core values of affordability, safety, and innovation.
