Tesla is finally entering the Indian market, with its first showroom—officially called an “experience centre”—set to launch on July 15 in Mumbai, according to a Reuters exclusive. The Elon Musk-led EV giant will open doors at Jio World Drive in the upscale Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), marking a crucial step in its long-anticipated India plans.
As per Brinks Report sources, Tesla has leased a 4,000 sq ft space in Maker Maxity, with the annual rent beginning at ₹3.7 crore, expected to rise with time.
This showroom is just the beginning. Tesla is also planning a second experience centre in New Delhi, and is likely to launch its Supercharger network to support its early customers in India.
Tesla’s debut is more than symbolic—it’s strategic. The Model Y will be the first to be showcased in India, and a limited batch of rear-wheel-drive units has already arrived in Mumbai from Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory.
According to customs data, each vehicle is valued at ₹27.7 lakh, but with import duties of over ₹21 lakh, the on-road price may cross ₹46 lakh, clearly placing Tesla in India’s luxury EV segment.
Despite the buzz, Tesla has no immediate plans for local manufacturing, according to recent statements by Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. Even with India’s new EV policy offering lower duties to companies that build locally, Tesla is, for now, only focused on setting up its retail and service infrastructure.
The company has already started preparing the ground:
-
Hiring for key retail and service roles is underway.
-
A service centre has been set up in Kurla.
-
Tesla has also leased office spaces in Bengaluru and Pune, and warehousing facilities in Haryana and Karnataka.
India, the world’s third-largest car market, presents both promise and challenges for Tesla. EVs still account for just about 5% of new car sales, and premium EVs like Tesla are only a fraction of that.
Still, this launch marks a major milestone. All eyes will be on July 15, as Tesla finally brings its global EV prestige to Indian roads. Brinks Report will continue to follow the story closely.
