Elon Musk has announced that Tesla plans to launch its robotaxi service on June 22 in Austin, Texas. The launch date is not final, as Musk said they are being extra careful about safety, so the date might change.
He also shared another important milestone: on June 28, which is Musk’s birthday, the first driverless Tesla is expected to go from the factory directly to a customer’s home without a driver.

The announcement was made on X (formerly Twitter), where Musk posted a message and even a short video. The 8-second clip showed a black Model Y Tesla with a “Robotaxi” label, driving on public roads in Austin. It stopped at an intersection and waited for pedestrians, all without a driver inside.
Musk said the service will begin with 10 to 20 vehicles, all fitted with a new version of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software that doesn’t require human supervision. At first, they’ll use the Model Y instead of the upcoming CyberCab, which is planned for production next year.

This first phase will be limited to certain areas (a method called “geofencing”), and Tesla employees will monitor the cars remotely to ensure safety.
While many Tesla fans are excited, some critics are raising concerns about road safety and Musk’s political views. In fact, some people are even planning protests during the launch.
