Just three months after the deadly Pahalgam terror attack that took 26 lives, the United States has officially designated The Resistance Front (TRF) as a global terrorist group. This is a major diplomatic victory for India and a clear message to Pakistan’s terror ecosystem.
What is The Resistance Front?
TRF is not a new group. It’s just Lashkar-e-Taiba in disguise. After Article 370 was removed in 2019, TRF came out of nowhere. It started as an online handle but quickly turned into a fully active terror outfit in Kashmir.
It called itself a “local resistance group” to hide its Pakistan links. But in truth, TRF is run by people who were either part of Lashkar or trained by them.
The Man Behind TRF
Sheikh Sajjad Gul, born in Srinagar in 1974, is the founder. He was labeled a terrorist by India in 2022. He claims TRF was formed to fight “oppression”, but investigations show his group shares money, weapons, and orders directly with Lashkar-e-Taiba and Hafiz Saeed.
India had already banned TRF in 2023 under the UAPA Act. But getting global recognition makes a difference. The US tag freezes their assets, blocks support, and sends a strong warning to those protecting these terrorists.
Before Pahalgam, There Was Ganderbal
The Resistance Front has been behind many attacks. In 2024, it killed 7 workers at a construction site in Ganderbal. Reports also show that in 2022 alone, 108 of 172 terrorists killed in Kashmir were TRF-linked.
They also made up most of the new recruits. Out of 100 new terrorists that year, 74 were from TRF.
After the Pahalgam attack, Pakistan tried to protect TRF’s name from a UN press release. China helped. But now, with the US putting TRF on its terrorist list, that shield is falling apart.
A Diplomatic Win for India
Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar welcomed the move, calling it proof of India–US strength in fighting terror. It shows that India’s pressure and evidence are working globally.
Why This Matters Now
Terror groups like The Resistance Front wear local masks but are run from across the border. By unmasking TRF, the world is finally calling out the truth. And India’s fight is getting global backing.
