Bengaluru, often known for its thriving tech scene, now has another reason to be in the spotlight: California Burrito.

The restaurant, founded by 22-year-old Bert Mueller, is redefining fast food in India with its fresh take on American burritos, blending global flavors with local flair. This 196-crore business is proof that the American dream isn’t just alive—it’s thriving on Indian soil.

From Craving to Creation: Why Bengaluru?

Bert’s journey from California to Bengaluru wasn’t part of any grand strategy. It started simply. “Honestly, it started with a craving,” Bert admits in a recent interview.

“I was traveling through India, and I just couldn’t find a decent burrito anywhere!” That’s when the idea struck—Bengaluru. The city, known for its young, vibrant energy and ever-growing appetite for new food experiences, seemed like the perfect fit.

What did Bengaluru offer? A thriving middle class eager for quality, affordable dining; a diverse, open-minded population willing to try new cuisines; and an entrepreneurial spirit that resonates with Bert’s own ambition.

With these ingredients, California Burrito was ready to make its mark.

A Burrito Experience, Not Just a Meal

California Burrito isn’t just another fast-food chain. It’s an experience. Bert made sure to tailor the menu to suit Indian tastes while preserving the authentic flavors of California. Freshly seasoned meats, vibrant vegetarian options, and sauces that pack a punch are just the start.

One bite of the aloo gobi burrito, with a touch of mint chutney, and you’ll understand why this place is so special. It’s not just about wrapping ingredients in a tortilla—it’s about creating a meal that’s as fun to eat as it is delicious.

What Sets California Burrito Apart?

  • Fresh, Locally Sourced Ingredients: Bert prioritizes using local produce, ensuring quality and supporting Indian farmers.
  • Customizable Menu: Whether it’s a burrito, a bowl, or a salad, customers can mix and match ingredients to suit their tastes.
  • Affordable Prices: The meals are hearty without being hard on the wallet, perfect for students and families alike.
  • A Fun Atmosphere: California Burrito offers a casual, vibrant dining space that appeals to the young crowd looking for more than just food.

“I Love India”: Bert’s Journey of Business and Belonging

Running a successful business in India wasn’t always easy, though. Bert faced the complexities of building a reliable supply chain, navigating cultural differences, and adjusting to India’s business landscape. But, as he says, it was all worth it.

“I love India,” Bert declares with a genuine smile. “The people, the culture, the energy—it’s all incredibly inspiring.” And he’s not just saying that. Bert speaks fluent Kannada and can navigate the notoriously chaotic Bangalore traffic like a local. His immersion in the culture has been key to his success.

California Burrito has grown to over 100 locations across Bengaluru and beyond, becoming a beloved staple for locals. Whether it’s students grabbing a quick lunch or families enjoying a relaxed weekend meal, the restaurant has become an integral part of the city’s food scene.

Why It Works: A Business Built on Passion

Bert’s story is an inspiring one. It shows that a simple craving, combined with hard work, passion, and an understanding of the market, can lead to incredible success. The California Burrito dream, born in the USA, has found a new home in India. And in doing so, it’s proven that the best recipes for success often come from blending cultures and flavors.
