Maruti Suzuki Escudo, the brand’s upcoming SUV, is expected to launch this Diwali. Positioned between the Brezza and Grand Vitara, this new model (codename Y17) is aiming straight at India’s most competitive SUV segment—where the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos dominate.
This isn’t just another new car. It’s a strategic punch.

Not a 7-Seater, But a Bigger 5-Seater
Originally, Maruti planned this SUV as a 7-seater version of the Grand Vitara to take on the Tata Safari or MG Hector Plus. But the plan changed. With more buyers choosing 5-seaters for city and daily use, Maruti trimmed it down.
Now, the Escudo will be a roomier 5-seater, giving you extra boot space and cabin comfort—likely beating both the Creta’s 433 liters and the Grand Vitara’s 373 liters.
Built on a Proven Platform
The Escudo will be built on the same Global-C platform that underpins the Grand Vitara. But it’ll be slightly longer—meaning more legroom and luggage room, without turning into a bus.
And yes, you’ll still get that SUV height and road presence everyone craves.

Engine Options for Every Kind of Driver
Maruti is offering a wide choice of engines:
- A 1.5L petrol with 101.65 hp
- A CNG variant with 86.79 hp
- A strong hybrid with a combined output of 113.97 hp
Transmission choices? Plenty: 5-speed manual, 6-speed automatic, and an e-CVT for the hybrid. You’ll also get options for 2WD or Suzuki’s AllGrip 4WD—a segment rarity.
In a market where Creta has no hybrid and Seltos only just caught up with features, the Escudo is making its pitch loud and clear.
What About the Price?
This is where it gets interesting.
The Escudo is expected to start lower than both the Creta and Seltos. That’s a bold move from Maruti. With petrol and CNG variants likely to hit below ₹11 lakh, and the hybrid variant aiming to offer better mileage than rivals, it’s not just a new SUV—it’s a new strategy.
Also, Toyota is expected to launch a rebadged twin of the Escudo, much like it did with the Glanza-Baleno and Urban Cruiser-GV.
In a market flooded with similar shapes and stale upgrades, the Maruti Suzuki Escudo brings fresh positioning and a strong badge. It’s not just here to look good—it’s here to win the middle-class garage.
So if you’re looking to buy a mid-size SUV this Diwali, wait a little. The Escudo might be the one you didn’t know you were waiting for.
