Baksho Bondi is ready to travel from the dusty lanes of Kolkata to the big screen in Melbourne. This Bengali film, also known as Shadowbox, will open the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2025 on August 14. It stars Tillotama Shome as Maya and is produced by Shome and actor Jim Sarbh.
After making its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year, Baksho Bondi now heads to Australia. It will be the Opening Night Film at IFFM, marking its Australian premiere.

A Story of Silent Strength
In Baksho Bondi, we meet Maya, a working woman living in a quiet suburb of Kolkata. She doesn’t shout. She doesn’t fight. But her strength is powerful. She lives her life with quiet courage, moving through small acts that speak volumes.
Directed by Tanushree Das and Saumyananda Sahi, both making their debut, the film shows how strong stories don’t always need loud voices. Sometimes, they come in whispers.
Tillotama Shome’s Powerful Role
Speaking about her role, Tillotama Shome said, “Baksho Bondi is close to my heart. Maya taught me how strong women can be, even when the world doesn’t see it. After Berlin, bringing her to Melbourne feels right. This film is for all the women who carry on without applause.”
A Perfect Start to IFFM 2025
IFFM Director Mitu Bhowmick Lange said, “Baksho Bondi is the perfect way to begin the festival. It shows how Indian cinema is bold, real, and full of heart. Tillotama’s performance is stunning. The film is simple but deep, and it touches everyone.”
The screening will take place on August 14, and the festival runs till August 24. This year, IFFM is celebrating its 16th edition. It continues to be one of the biggest Indian film festivals outside India, supported by the Victorian Government.
On August 15, IFFM will also host its annual Awards Night, honouring films and shows from all formats, including OTT.
Baksho Bondi is more than just a film. It’s a mirror to real life. It shows how women live, work, love, and survive in silence. It is also a proud moment for Bengali cinema and Indian independent filmmakers.
This movie proves that even a quiet life can make noise on the world stage.
