TomTom, a well-known Dutch navigation company, has announced that it will be laying off around 300 employees, which is about 8% of its global workforce. The company says this is part of a larger restructuring plan to improve efficiency and speed up product delivery.

Most of the job cuts will happen in the sales, support, and application teams.

Why the Layoffs?

TomTom is changing the way it works by focusing more on products that are powered by artificial intelligence (AI). This move is meant to help the company become more product-focused and better serve its customers.

The company’s CEO, Harold Goddijn, said:

“We are becoming a product-led company with modern technology. This will improve the user experience and help us deliver value faster.”

What’s Changing at TomTom?

TomTom is:

  • Upgrading its technology systems
  • Revamping its mapmaking system
  • Launching new tools like Orbis Maps, which offers more detailed and up-to-date mapping data
  • Building reusable software and user-friendly products for easier integration with other systems

Support for Affected Employees

TomTom said it will help the employees affected by the job cuts during this transition.

This decision comes at a time when the company is seeing less demand for standalone navigation devices. TomTom is now focusing more on providing mapping technology to big names like Apple, Volkswagen, and Huawei.
