US President Donald Trump has said that Russia has lost India as a major oil customer because of his new trade tariffs. Speaking before his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Trump warned that if he applies similar “secondary sanctions” on China, it would be “devastating” for Russia’s economy.

Trump recently raised tariffs on India’s exports to the US. He first added a 25% tariff on August 7 and has now increased it to a total of 50%. The White House explained that the decision was linked to India’s oil trade with Russia, which the US considers a threat to its national security and foreign policy.

During an interview, Trump said, “Russia lost India as an oil client. India was buying about 40% of its oil from Russia. If I put secondary sanctions on China, it would be devastating for Russia. If I have to do it, I’ll do it.”

When asked why India was being targeted when countries like China are also buying Russian oil, Trump replied that more sanctions could follow and similar steps against China “could happen.”

India’s Response

India strongly criticized the US decision. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) called the move “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.”

India explained that its oil imports from Russia are based on market needs and are important to ensure energy security for its 1.4 billion people.

The MEA said, “It is regrettable that the US has imposed tariffs on India for something many other countries are also doing. India will take all necessary steps to protect its national interests.”
