US Court Temporarily Allows Trump’s Tariffs to Stay; White House Plans to Take Fight to Supreme Court

Trump’s Tariffs Temporarily Reinstated by US Appeals Court

A US federal appeals court has temporarily allowed President Donald Trump to keep his tariffs in place. This happened after a lower court had ruled against most of Trump’s trade policies. The Trump administration quickly challenged that decision, saying the tariffs were important for national security.

The Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit agreed to the Trump team’s emergency request to pause the lower court’s ruling. The administration argued that removing the tariffs now would hurt the country’s safety and economy.

Trump is currently facing several lawsuits that claim he went beyond his legal powers when he used the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act to declare a national emergency. This allowed him to impose tariffs—extra taxes on goods from other countries—on imports from nearly every country.

Just one day before the appeal, a three-judge panel from the US Court of International Trade ruled that Trump had misused his powers. That decision was a major setback for Trump, whose trade policies have often affected global financial markets.

Despite that, Trump’s trade adviser, Peter Navarro, said on Thursday that the tariffs are still active and are meant to protect American workers and factories. “The Trump tariff agenda is alive, well, and will be carried out,” Navarro said.

The White House welcomed the temporary court decision but remains concerned that the appeals court might later block Trump’s tariff policy. Officials said they are prepared to take the case to the Supreme Court to prove their actions are legal. If the current legal path fails, they said Trump would find another way to enforce the tariffs.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, “We believe we will win this fight in the Supreme Court. America can’t function if judges interfere with sensitive trade talks by the president.” She added that other countries trust Trump and likely see how unfair the earlier ruling was.
