Recently, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) posted on social media that the U visa program, which started with good intentions, has now become problematic due to poor management and corruption. They said what began as a helpful law to support real crime victims is now being misused by fraudsters, dishonest lawyers, and even some corrupt police officials.
What Is the U Visa?
The U visa is a special type of non-immigrant visa in the U.S. It was created to help people who are victims of certain serious crimes and who are willing to help the police or government investigate or punish those crimes.

If someone is approved for a U visa, they get:
- Temporary legal status and permission to work in the U.S.
- The same temporary status for certain family members.
- A chance to apply for permanent residency (green card) later.
Who Can Apply for a U Visa?
People who are victims of crimes like:
- Domestic violence
- Extortion
- Kidnapping
- Manslaughter or Murder
- False imprisonment
To qualify, they must:
- Be a victim of a serious crime.
- Have helpful information about the crime.
- Be helping or willing to help the police or government in investigating or prosecuting the crime.
It’s important to note that law enforcement agencies don’t decide who gets a U visa — USCIS does. But law enforcement officers can support the application by confirming that the person was indeed helpful in solving the crime.

What’s the Problem Now?
USCIS said that some people are misusing the U visa program by faking information or working with dishonest lawyers. In some cases, even police officers have been involved in U visa fraud.
They mentioned a case involving five people in Oakdale and nearby cities, including current and former police chiefs, who are suspected of being part of this fraud.
The agency claims that under former President Donald Trump’s leadership, they took steps to stop these types of scams.
