A Big Surprise! Europe’s Underwater Wind Turbines Worked Differently Than Expected!

Europe Puts Wind Turbines Underwater – The Results Were Surprising

Europe is always looking for new ways to use renewable energy, and now, it has taken a bold step by placing wind turbines under the ocean. The goal is to reduce the use of fossil fuels and set an example for other countries to follow. France, which has a long coastline, has launched a major underwater wind project called NH1. This project aims to provide steady electricity to local communities.

How the NH1 Project Works

Engineers designed NH1 with four turbines that rotate continuously underwater to generate power. This floating offshore wind project in the Mediterranean Sea is expected to provide clean energy with minimal impact on the environment. Although some people worried about marine life, the project’s team has assured that it is safe for underwater creatures.

Better Results Than Expected

Normandie Hydroliennes, a French renewable energy company, faced several challenges when developing this idea. They had to consider the impact on marine life and whether the turbines could withstand underwater conditions without rusting or breaking down.

However, after testing, experts found that the turbines work efficiently, the materials used are long-lasting, and the turbines generate a lot of power. Water is a powerful natural force, making it easier for these turbines to keep operating smoothly.

How Much Power Can It Produce?

According to Euronews, where the NH1 project is located, has some of the strongest sea currents in the world. It has the potential to produce 15 to 18 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity, which could supply power to around 8 million people. Seeing these results, other coastal regions are now exploring whether they can use the same method.

Impact on Marine Life

One of the biggest concerns with underwater wind turbines is their effect on marine ecosystems. To address this, NH1 installed its turbines 38 meters below the surface and took extra precautions to protect marine life. Surprisingly, marine creatures have not only remained unharmed but have also started returning to the project site. Experts have found that these structures create a habitat for fish and other sea creatures, similar to what was observed in the MeyGen project off Scotland’s coast. However, some concerns remain about long-term effects such as noise and vibrations affecting marine life.

The Future of Underwater Wind Power

Despite the challenges, this project has gained attention in Europe and other coastal regions. More countries are now considering underwater wind turbines as part of their renewable energy plans. Since the NH1 project has proven to be effective and environmentally friendly, experts believe underwater wind power could play a major role in the future of clean energy.

Additionally, the project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 57,878 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, making a significant contribution to fighting climate change. If these positive results continue, underwater wind power could be a game-changer for renewable energy worldwide.
