UPI (Unified Payments Interface) services faced a major outage, causing trouble for thousands of users across India. People using popular apps like Google Pay (GPay), PhonePe, Paytm, and banking apps such as SBI, ICICI, and HDFC reported failed payments and fund transfer issues.
UPI Outage: What Happened?
According to Downdetector, a website that tracks service issues, over 2,200 users complained about problems with UPI. Most of these issues were about failed payment transactions and the inability to send money. Even the Times of India (TOI) Tech team couldn’t complete their payments during this time.

The outage affected not just mobile payment apps, but also major banks’ UPI services, showing how widespread the issue was.
NPCI Acknowledges UPI Issue
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which operates UPI, confirmed that they were facing technical issues. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), NPCI said:
“We are working to resolve the issue and will keep you updated. We regret the inconvenience caused.”
The problem caused partial transaction failures, meaning some payments would go through, while others wouldn’t.

- April 2: Hundreds of users again reported UPI outages, especially during fund transfers.
- Now: Another widespread UPI outage affected major apps and banks.
Social Media Reacts
People rushed to social media platforms like X to share their frustration and post funny memes. Hashtags like #UPI, #GPay, #PhonePe, and #Paytm were trending.
