Indian cricketer Varun Chakaravarthy recently shared his incredible journey to success in a chat with Ravichandran Ashwin on the YouTube show Kutti Stories with Ash. His path to becoming a top cricketer was full of ups and downs, including careers as an architect, musician, businessman, and even a junior artist in films.

Starting as an Architect
After finishing college, Varun worked as an assistant architect, earning between ₹14,000 and ₹18,000 per month. However, he soon realized that a desk job wasn’t for him.
“I worked in an architecture company for about one and a half years. I started with ₹14,000 and left when it reached ₹18,000,” he said.
A Short Musical Dream
Next, he tried following his passion for music by learning the guitar. But he admitted that he didn’t have the deep love required to keep going.
“I couldn’t practice for more than an hour a day. I was doing it to get attention, not out of true passion,” Varun said.
A Failed Business Due to a Cyclone
He then started his own interior design and construction business, which was doing well. Unfortunately, Cyclone Vardha destroyed his setup, and he had to shut it down.

A Step into the Film World
Trying something new again, Varun entered the film industry. He aimed to become an assistant director, but it didn’t work out. However, when someone asked if he played cricket, he got a chance to act in a movie as a junior artist, earning ₹600 per day. He also directed a few short films and enjoyed the creative process, though he found it tough to write proper scripts.
“I liked writing emotional stories but couldn’t turn them into screenplays,” he said.
The Cricket Dream Comes True
Throughout all this, Varun continued playing tennis-ball cricket on the weekends. His love for the game finally paid off when he was selected for the 2021 T20 World Cup. After some injury troubles, he made a strong comeback, taking nine wickets in India’s recent Champions Trophy win in Dubai.
