In India, many people are turning to vitamin supplements to stay healthy. But taking more vitamins doesn’t always mean better health — in fact, taking too much can be dangerous.

When Too Much Becomes Harmful
Some vitamins, like A, D, E, and K, are fat-soluble, meaning they stay in your body for longer. If you take high doses of these, they can build up in your system and cause problems like:

  • Liver damage
  • Kidney stones
  • Bleeding issues
  • Bone loss

Even water-soluble vitamins (like B6 and niacin), which usually leave the body through urine, can cause issues if taken in large amounts for a long time. These can lead to nerve damage or skin flushing.

Karan Khurana, founder of WishNew Wellness, says Indian hospitals are now seeing more cases of vitamin D overdose. This often happens when people take high-dose vitamin D (60,000 IU) every week without proper testing or doctor supervision.

Warning Signs to Look Out For
Some early signs that you may be taking too many vitamins include:

  • Constant headaches
  • Nausea
  • Skin peeling
  • Feeling very thirsty
  • Muscle weakness
  • Frequent urination
  • Unexplained bruising or bleeding

How to Use Vitamins Safely
Karan Khurana shares tips to stay safe when using supplements:

  1. Eat a balanced diet first: Traditional Indian meals with lentils, grains, vegetables, curd, and nuts often provide enough vitamins naturally.
  2. Use supplements only when needed: Take them if a doctor confirms a deficiency.
  3. Check the dosage: Pick products approved by FSSAI and try to stay within 100% of the daily recommended dose.
  4. Don’t double up: Avoid taking multivitamins along with other vitamin gummies that might have the same ingredients.
  5. Get tested regularly: Check your vitamin levels with a blood test before continuing high-dose supplements.

Final Advice
Supplements can be helpful, but only when used the right way. Always follow scientific advice and consult a doctor. Let natural foods be your main source of nutrition — you don’t need mega doses to stay healthy.
