U.S. Vice President JD Vance will visit India for four days starting Monday. The visit comes as both countries work towards a new trade deal aimed at boosting their economic relationship. During his visit, Vance will meet with India’s Prime Minister in New Delhi to discuss topics such as trade, economy, and global issues. This visit is a key diplomatic mission for the U.S. government, especially as tensions grow between the U.S. and China, India’s main rival.
A trade agreement between India and the U.S. could strengthen both countries’ economic and diplomatic ties. The U.S. is already India’s biggest trading partner, with trade valued at $190 billion. India’s foreign ministry says the visit will allow both sides to review the progress in their relationship and discuss global issues of mutual interest.

Vance’s visit follows the trip of Tulsi Gabbard, Director of National Intelligence, to India, and comes just two months after Indian Prime Minister Modi met President Trump in Washington. Modi was one of the first leaders to meet Trump after he returned to the White House. During their meeting, they discussed a potential trade deal and how to reduce the impact of Trump’s tariffs on India. Modi also expressed interest in buying more military equipment from the U.S. and finding ways to reduce tariffs on U.S. goods.

In recent talks, Modi and business leaders like Elon Musk have discussed areas of collaboration, including technology and innovation. India is a close ally of the U.S. in many areas, such as trade, defense, and countering China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific. Major U.S. companies, including Apple and Google, have expanded their operations in India. Recently, Musk’s Starlink partnered with two of India’s top telecom companies to offer satellite internet services.
The U.S. and India are aiming to more than double their bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030 under the new trade agreement. This deal is especially important for India, as Trump’s tariffs could hurt its key industries, including agriculture, auto components, machinery, medical equipment, and jewelry. Modi’s government is trying to strengthen the economy and create jobs through increased exports, but these tariffs could make it difficult.
Modi has worked closely with Trump, and it seems their relationship will continue to grow, particularly in trade, as China’s role in global trade continues to rise. India has already taken steps to strengthen its ties with the U.S., such as agreeing to buy more oil, energy, and defense equipment.
The U.S. is also pushing for better access to India’s agricultural and dairy markets. However, India has been hesitant, as farming is an essential part of the country’s economy and employs most of the population.
This will be Vance’s first official trip to India, and it has special significance because his wife, Usha, is of Indian descent. Usha’s parents, who are from South India, moved to the U.S. in the 1970s. Vance and his family will visit Jaipur and Agra during their trip and participate in cultural activities, according to a statement from the White House.
