Depression is a serious global issue, affecting millions of people. The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes it as a major health concern, with around 280 million people worldwide experiencing it. While depression affects both men and women, it is more common in women and older adults.

Although these numbers are alarming, depression is treatable. Recent research suggests that a simple weekly habit could help reduce the risk of depression.

What Does the Study Say?

Scientists from Shantou University Medical College in China looked at the sexual habits of 15,794 adults in the United States, aged 20 to 59. They wanted to understand if sexual activity could affect mental health. The study found that people who had sex once or twice a week were less likely to suffer from depression.

Why Does This Happen?

The researchers believe that having sex regularly can improve mental health because it releases hormones like endorphins and dopamine, which make us feel good. This could explain why people who have sex once or twice a week tend to have better mental well-being, especially younger people between 20 and 30 years old.

What Is Depression?

Depression is a mental health condition that causes persistent sadness and a loss of interest in activities. It can affect how a person feels, thinks, and behaves. Depression can disrupt daily life, making it hard to work, go to school, or interact with others. Symptoms include changes in appetite, sleep patterns, energy levels, and concentration.
