In India’s push to modernize its armed forces, a vital debate has emerged: Should we pick the best defence technology (T1) or go with the lowest price (L1)?

Former DRDO Chief SK Mishra made this crystal clear at the Powering Bharat Summit. He warned that picking L1—the cheapest option—often means settling for second best and risking our national security.

This isn’t just about saving money. It’s about protecting every Indian soldier with the best equipment possible. Imagine sending our forces into battle with gear that’s cheaper but less reliable. That’s a gamble we cannot afford.

But here’s the bottom line: when India opts for T1, it means investing in cutting-edge missiles, radar, and communication systems that keep our borders safe. It means fewer breakdowns, less downtime, and stronger deterrence against enemies.

Choosing L1 might save a few rupees now, but it can cost us dearly later. Remember, a missile that fails in a critical moment isn’t just a machine breaking down—it’s a potential threat to our soldiers and citizens.

The Power of T1: More Than Just Fancy Gadgets

T1 is more than a label. It stands for the best technology India can buy or develop. It means stronger missiles, better radar, and smarter communication. It’s like choosing a sports car over a rusty bike for a high-speed chase—you want reliability and power, not just a cheap ride.

But there’s another side: boosting India’s own defence industry. When we pick T1, especially if it’s homegrown, we build our own technology heroes. This creates jobs, sharpens skills, and makes India a global player in defence innovation.

Strategic Autonomy Is Non-Negotiable

Depending on cheap foreign gear means depending on others. That’s a risky place for any country, especially one like India with complex neighbours. Choosing T1—especially indigenous T1—means we call the shots, not suppliers abroad. It gives India the freedom to defend itself without strings attached.

A Balanced Approach: Smart Buying, Not Just Expensive

Of course, T1 doesn’t mean buying the priciest gear blindly. We need smart decisions that weigh total costs—maintenance, upgrades, and long-term value. That’s why technology transfer deals and transparent procurement are crucial. When Indian firms learn from global leaders, they grow stronger. And transparency stops corruption from sneaking in.

In the race to secure India’s future, defence technology (T1) must lead the way—not just the lowest price (L1). It’s about protecting India’s borders with the best tools, building our own capabilities, and standing tall on the global stage. As Indians, we deserve nothing less than the best for our soldiers and our nation.
