Mumbai’s public transport just got a major upgrade. The newly extended Colaba-Bandra-Aarey Metro Line 3, now reaching Acharya Atre Chowk, saw a massive surge in ridership over the weekend. In just two days, more than 65,000 commuters took advantage of the new Phase 2A section.
The weekend rush kicked off with over 32,000 riders on Day 1 (Saturday) and continued with 32,725 on Sunday, until 8 p.m.

The numbers came as a pleasant surprise, showing the city’s eager embrace of the extended Metro line. In fact, on the first day alone, 16,377 passengers traveled between Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and the newly inaugurated Acharya Atre Chowk, part of the new Phase 2A stretch.

What This Means for Mumbai’s Commuters
The new extension significantly reduces travel time, connecting some of Mumbai’s most vital commercial and residential hubs.
The Phase 2A stretch runs from BKC to Acharya Atre Chowk, right in the heart of the commercial district. With traffic jams and overcrowded trains being a part of Mumbai life, this new route offers commuters a much-needed break, making travel quicker and more comfortable.
“By connecting major hotspots like BKC and Aarey with key locations like the airport and Dharavi, Metro Line 3 is improving not just the speed but also the accessibility of the city,” said an official from the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd.
The official further added that the steady ridership over the weekend shows the line’s importance to office-goers and leisure travelers alike, offering a smooth ride to the city’s busiest areas.

Mumbai Metro Line 3: A Game-Changer
This extension is not just another line in Mumbai’s Metro system. It’s a crucial piece of infrastructure that ties together multiple areas of the city. From Aarey to Siddhivinayak Temple, the entire route is set to open in August 2025. But even with only a portion open, commuters are already making the most of it.
The new alignment helps reduce travel time between important locations, with the line covering an extensive 32.5 kilometers, including the upcoming connections between Dharavi, Dadar, and more.
In the long run, this will be more than just a convenience. It’s a much-needed solution for a city that never stops moving. Whether you’re trying to catch a flight or make it to a meeting on time, the Metro Line 3 extension could become your best friend in navigating Mumbai’s chaos.

Why Does This Matter?
Imagine skipping the morning traffic, the endless wait for overcrowded local trains, and the frustration of navigating Mumbai’s narrow streets. That’s exactly what Metro Line 3 promises.
With faster access to commercial centers and residential areas, it’s not just for those commuting to work—it’s a game-changer for everyone in the city. Whether it’s getting to a concert in Worli or traveling across town for a meeting, the new Metro line makes it all easier.
In just its first weekend, the Metro extension delivered on its promise of reliability and efficiency.
The ridership statistics back up the excitement, and more commuters are likely to make it their go-to travel option as they get accustomed to this new, faster way of moving through Mumbai.
The Road Ahead
As the entire Metro Line 3 opens by August, the ridership is expected to grow even further. With a well-structured connection between Aarey, BKC, the airport terminals, and other hotspots, the line promises to be a key player in Mumbai’s future transport landscape.
No more squeezing into crowded buses or local trains—you’ll be able to glide through the city in comfort.
While Metro Line 3 continues to develop, one thing is certain: Mumbai’s transport scene will never be the same again.
