A fast-moving wildfire broke out on Sunday behind Kelowna International Airport in British Columbia, Canada. The fire started in the Ellison area, just north of the airport, and quickly spread due to dry weather.
Because of the fire, emergency teams ordered tactical evacuations in nearby neighbourhoods. Flights at the Kelowna airport were cancelled, and the airspace was closed to allow firefighting aircraft to work without interruption.

Firefighting Efforts Underway
The wildfire, named Whelan Creek, is now being held and is about 4.31 hectares in size. The BC Wildfire Service sent three initial attack crews, two helicopters, and had four air tankers helping earlier. Local fire departments from Kelowna, Lake Country, Joe Rich, North Westside, and Wilson’s Landing also joined the effort.
Fire officer Cali Nessman said the fire is burning at a moderate level (Rank 2 to 3), with some visible flames and a slow to moderate spread.
Evacuations and Safety Measures
As the fire came close to homes, the Kelowna police (RCMP) went door-to-door asking people to leave. Areas like Rockface Road, Upper Booth Road, and Dead Pine Road were affected. Some people stayed at the Beasley Community Centre in Lake Country.
Airport Shut Down
More than 25 flights were cancelled or delayed due to the fire. The airport remained closed to give firefighters full access to the sky.
Ongoing Situation
No major injuries have been reported, but the situation is still changing depending on the weather. The cause of the fire is still unknown, and people are being told to stay away from the area and follow official instructions.
Passengers should check with airlines and stay updated through official airport channels. Authorities will share more updates as they continue to fight the fire and monitor the area.
