Australia’s test captain Pat Cummins had a clear message after their 159-run win over the West Indies in Bridgetown: he’s backing Sam Konstas all the way.

The 19-year-old opener had a tough debut. He scored just three runs in the first innings and five in the second. But Cummins was proud to support him, despite the early struggles.

“You might not have the flying hours under your belt as a youngster… but you’ve got to come in and work out your craft on the bigger stage.” — Pat Cummins

Konstas, a highly-rated talent from Sydney, couldn’t find his rhythm on a tricky pitch. But Cummins made it clear — the future is bright, and patience is key.

Hard Day for Konstas, But Captain’s Trust Matters

Cummins didn’t sugarcoat it. He said it’s tough to “step out of your bubble” when the pitch is unpredictable and you’re trying to score smartly.

“Sammy tried different things yesterday, but not all worked out. But I’ve got full confidence,” Cummins added.

It wasn’t just Konstas. Cameron Green also found it hard at number three. But Australia found their momentum through Travis Head, Beau Webster, and Alex Carey — all of whom played smart, aggressive cricket.

Cummins Praises the Middle Order

Australia’s lead came thanks to solid middle-order batting. Head, Webster, and Carey didn’t just hang in there — they pushed the score and took control.

“Those three were brilliant. They kept the scoreboard moving and always looked to score,” Cummins said.

Their efforts meant the West Indies were chasing a target of 301. But Josh Hazlewood stole the show with the ball, taking 5 wickets for 43 runs. The Windies were bowled out for just 141.

Fast Finish, Clear Message

The game ended two days early. Cummins joked about getting some extra rest but made a strong point — this win wasn’t luck, it was about smart choices under pressure.

“We didn’t think we’d get all 10 wickets so quickly. But the pitch was doing tricks,” he said.

The story here isn’t just about the win. It’s about leadership. Cummins backing Konstas even after failure says more about this team than just the scorecard.

In cricket, talent matters — but trust from your captain? That’s priceless. Konstas may have missed out this time, but with Pat Cummins in his corner, you can bet he’ll be back stronger.
