Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has made a striking claim: 155 Chinese fighters in Ukraine war have been identified by Ukrainian intelligence as fighting on Russia’s side. His announcement follows the capture of two Chinese nationals on the battlefield.
This revelation has added a new layer to the ongoing war and raised questions about China’s possible involvement—or lack of control—over its citizens joining foreign conflicts.

Who Are These Fighters?
According to a leaked Ukrainian military document, most of the Chinese fighters are serving in low-ranking positions within Russian units. While the document is not verified by CNN, it reportedly contains names, photos, and military contract details dating back to early 2024.
Zelensky stated that the recruits were drawn through online advertisements—some even on Chinese social media platforms. He alleged that Beijing was aware of these efforts.

How Were They Recruited?
One of the captured Chinese nationals shared his story. He said he paid around 300,000 Russian rubles (about $3,500) to a middleman in China to enlist in the Russian military. His goal? Russian citizenship.
He also revealed that his group underwent military training in Luhansk Oblast, a region under Russian occupation. The training lacked proper translation support. Instead, they used gestures and mobile phone translators to communicate.
China Responds
China strongly denied the allegations. A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Lin Jian, called the claims “groundless.” He emphasized that China advises its citizens to stay away from war zones and not to join foreign armies.
However, Lin added that China is verifying the situation with Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Next Move
Ukraine is now working to confirm the identities of all 155 individuals. Officials are also considering offering the captured Chinese nationals in a prisoner exchange for Ukrainian soldiers held by Russia.
The Ukrainian government sees this as a potential diplomatic pressure point, especially if more Chinese fighters are found in the conflict.
What’s Russia Saying?
The Kremlin has declined to comment on the matter. As of now, there has been no official confirmation or denial from Moscow regarding the presence of Chinese fighters in its military ranks.
This silence only adds to the mystery—and the tension.
Global Impact and Questions Ahead
The presence of Chinese fighters in Ukraine war could complicate the already tense relationships among China, Russia, and Western countries. While there’s no evidence of state involvement, the optics are troubling.
Is China doing enough to prevent its citizens from joining foreign wars? Or is this a loophole being ignored?
As the conflict continues, more such surprises may unfold.
