Donald Trump Says No Plan to Remove Powell as Fed Chair

Former President Donald Trump stated he has no intention of removing Jerome Powell as Chair of the US Federal Reserve. This comes despite Trump previously asserting he should have a voice in monetary policy decisions, including interest rate adjustments.

In an October interview with Bloomberg News, Trump commented on his desired level of influence. “I think I have the right to say, ‘I think you should go up or down a little bit.’ I don’t think I should be allowed to order it,” he said. “But I think I have the right to put in comments as to whether or not interest rates should go up or down.” This statement reflects Trump’s previous calls for greater presidential involvement in the Federal Reserve’s operations.

While Trump has not publicly articulated a plan to remove Powell, his past comments suggest a belief in presidential influence over economic policy. The Federal Reserve’s independence from political influence is a key tenet of US economic policy, however. His recent statement indicates a possible softening of this stance, or a change in strategy.
