IPL 2025: Tanmay Srivastava Makes History as First Player-Turned-Umpire

From Player to Umpire: Tanmay Srivastava’s Historic IPL Journey

A Unique Cricketing Milestone

Tanmay Srivastava, a name familiar to cricket enthusiasts, is set to create history in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Known for his role in India’s 2008 U19 World Cup victory under Virat Kohli’s captaincy, Tanmay is now stepping into a new role—umpiring in the IPL 2025. This makes him the first cricketer to play and umpire in the prestigious league.

Early Days and IPL Stint

Tanmay’s journey began with the Punjab Kings (formerly Kings XI Punjab) during the 2008 and 2009 IPL seasons. Although he had limited opportunities, batting only three times and scoring eight runs, his potential was evident. He was also part of the Deccan Chargers and Kochi Tuskers Kerala squads but didn’t get a chance to play for them.

Domestic Cricket and U19 Glory

Beyond the IPL, Tanmay had a solid domestic career. Representing Uttar Pradesh, he played 90 first-class, 44 List A, and 34 T20 matches, amassing over 7,000 runs across formats. His standout performance came in the 2008 U19 World Cup, where he was the highest run-scorer with 262 runs, including a crucial 46 in the final against South Africa.

Transition to Umpiring

After retiring in 2020, Tanmay shifted his focus to umpiring. He has officiated in several domestic competitions like the Vijay Hazare Trophy and the Ranji Trophy. His dedication and knowledge of the game have now earned him a spot in the IPL 2025 as an umpire, a rare feat for a former player.

What Makes This Special?

Tanmay’s transition from player to umpire is not just a personal achievement but also an inspiration for many. It highlights the diverse opportunities within cricket and showcases his deep understanding and love for the game.
