Tourist Submarine Sinks in Egypt’s Red Sea: 6 Dead, 39 Rescued

On March 27, 2025, a tourist submarine named Sindbad sank near the popular Egyptian resort of Hurghada. Six Russian tourists lost their lives, while 39 others—including visitors from India, Norway, and Sweden—were safely rescued.

The submarine, designed for underwater sightseeing, could dive up to 25 meters, offering breathtaking views of the Red Sea’s coral reefs.

The Rescue and Aftermath

Authorities confirmed that all passengers and crew were accounted for, with most survivors taken to hospitals or their hotels.

The Egyptian crew members, including the licensed captain, cooperated with investigators to determine the cause of the accident. Initial reports ruled out militant activity, pointing instead to possible technical or environmental factors.

A Blow to Egypt’s Tourism

The Red Sea is a lifeline for Egypt’s tourism industry, which earned $14.1 billion in 2024—more than double its Suez Canal revenue.

Recent incidents, including boat capsizes due to rough waves, have raised safety concerns. However, officials insist that the Sindbad had proper licensing and passed inspections.

Looking Ahead

As Egypt works to reassure travelers, questions linger about safety protocols for underwater excursions. With tourism vital to the economy, authorities face pressure to prevent future tragedies.
