Navratri 2025: Dates, 9-Day Calendar, Importance, and Traditions in India

Chaitra Navratri will begin on March 30, 2025. This 9-day festival is celebrated across India in different ways. There are four types of Navratri, but the most well-known and widely celebrated is Sharad Navratri, which happens in autumn. During Chaitra Navratri, people worship Goddess Durga and her nine forms.

Who is Maa Brahmacharini?

Maa Brahmacharini is the second form of Goddess Durga and is worshipped on the second day of Navratri. Her name comes from “Brahma” (penance) and “Charini” (one who practices), meaning she represents devotion, patience, and determination. She is an ascetic form of Goddess Parvati, who did intense meditation to win Lord Shiva as her husband.

Here is the Chaitra Navratri 2025 schedule

• March 30 (Day 1) – Worship of Goddess Shailputri
• March 31 (Day 2) – Worship of Goddess Brahmacharini
• April 1 (Day 3) – Worship of Goddess Chandraghanta
• April 2 (Day 4) – Worship of Goddess Kushmanda
• April 3 (Day 5) – Worship of Goddess Skandamata
• April 4 (Day 6) – Worship of Goddess Katyayani
• April 5 (Day 7) – Worship of Goddess Kalaratri
• April 6 (Day 8) – Worship of Goddess Mahagauri
• April 7 (Day 9) – Worship of Goddess Siddhidatri

Maa Brahmacharini is shown as a peaceful and graceful figure. She wears a white saree, symbolizing purity, and is adorned with rudraksha beads. She carries a rosary (japamala) in her right hand, representing meditation, and a water pot (kamandalu) in her left hand, symbolizing simplicity and self-control.

2nd Day of Navratri 2025: March 31, 2025

The second day of Chaitra Navratri is dedicated to Maa Brahmacharini. She represents devotion, patience, and strong willpower. Her name means “a devoted seeker of knowledge,” showing her dedication to wisdom and spiritual learning.

Why is Chaitra Navratri Important?

Chaitra Navratri celebrates the victory of good over evil. It tells the story of Goddess Durga’s battle against the demon Mahishasura. Since the gods could not defeat him due to a special boon, they asked Goddess Durga for help. She fought a fierce battle for nine days and nights, finally defeating Mahishasura and bringing peace.

How Different States Celebrate Navratri

  • Gujarat: People celebrate with Garba dance and fasting. A clay pot called “garbo,” representing life, is worshipped.
  • West Bengal & Eastern States: Navratri is known as Durga Puja, celebrated with large pandals, cultural programs, and grand festivities.
  • Karnataka: It is celebrated as Dasara, with grand processions and worship of Goddess Chamundeshwari.
  • Andhra Pradesh: Women celebrate Bathukamma Panduga by worshipping Goddess Gauri with colorful flower stacks.
  • Bihar & Jharkhand: The festival includes a big Rama Navami fair and worship of Goddess Durga along with other deities.

Navratri is a time of devotion, celebration, and cultural unity, bringing people together to honor the divine power of Goddess Durga.
