PM Modi Flags Off Vande Bharat Train to Kashmir on April 19

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will launch the first Vande Bharat Express to Kashmir on April 19 from Katra, Jammu. This marks the completion of the 272 km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail project. Union Minister Jitendra Singh shared this update on Sunday.

New Train Service Between Katra and Kashmir

The train will initially operate from Katra since Jammu station is undergoing renovation. Officials confirmed that the railway project was completed last month, and trial runs on the Katra-Baramulla route have been successful. The Commissioner of Railway Safety has also approved the service.

PM Modi’s Visit to Udhampur

On April 19, PM Modi will visit Udhampur, where he will inaugurate the world’s highest railway bridge before flagging off the Vande Bharat train. This new rail connection has been a long-standing demand, as train services in the region currently operate only between Sangaldan and Baramulla in Kashmir and from Katra to other parts of the country.

A Challenging Rail Project

The Kashmir rail project started in 1997 but was delayed due to difficult terrain and weather conditions. It includes:

  • 38 tunnels covering 119 km, with the longest tunnel (T-49) stretching 12.75 km—India’s longest transportation tunnel.
  • 927 bridges covering 13 km, including the Chenab Bridge, the world’s highest railway arch bridge, standing 359 meters above the river—35 meters taller than the Eiffel Tower!

Faster Travel Between Jammu and Srinagar

The Vande Bharat Express will significantly reduce travel time between Jammu and Srinagar, providing a modern and efficient rail service for the region. This development is a major step in improving connectivity and transportation in Kashmir.
