Albanese vs Dutton: First Australia Election Debate 2025

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and opposition leader Peter Dutton went head-to-head in their first Australia election debate ahead of the upcoming federal election on 3 May

focused mainly on the cost of living — a major concern for voters. When the host asked the audience if they were struggling with daily expenses, most people raised their hands, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

Peter Dutton called it a “very confronting scene” and said he would help Australians by cutting fuel tax temporarily to reduce costs quickly.

Anthony Albanese said global problems were affecting Australia, but he highlighted his success in reducing inflation, increasing wages, and noted that interest rates are starting to fall.

The first question of the night was about how the leaders would handle tariffs from US President Donald Trump. Albanese said Australia is well-prepared and that his government would keep negotiating with the United States for a better deal.

“We want zero tariffs both ways, since Australia doesn’t put tariffs on US goods,” he added.

Dutton responded by saying that his past experience working with the Trump government would help him get a better deal. He also said Australia needs a strong leader who can stand up to bullies and protect the country.

The debate ended with a poll of 100 undecided voters, who voted Albanese as the winner of the night.

This Australia election debate gave voters a clear look at how both leaders plan to tackle rising costs and handle international trade challenges.
