Rajasthan Royals, Avani Lekhara & Sangakkara Tackle Gender Gaps in India

Avani Lekhara

Paralympic champion Avani Lekhara is teaming up with the Rajasthan Royals to spark a transformation far beyond the cricket pitch. With support from cricket legend Kumar Sangakkara, the Royals have launched a powerful initiative to uplift women in Rajasthan—one of India’s most socially complex states when it comes to gender equality.

What’s the Big Deal for Everyday Rajasthanis?

Here’s the plain truth: Rajasthan ranks among the lowest in India for women’s literacy, health access, and job participation. That’s not just a statistic—it’s a daily barrier for millions of girls and women trying to live a dignified life.

Now, the Royals, through their Royal Rajasthan Foundation (RRF), are putting their brand and resources to work. They’re offering real programs—education, job skills, and community support—not just hashtags and slogans.

And now? They’ve got Avani Lekhara, India’s first female Paralympic gold medalist, leading the charge.

Avani Lekhara: A Champion On and Off the Field

When Avani Lekhara won gold in Tokyo, the country saw a hero. But in Rajasthan, where she grew up, she became a beacon of what’s possible despite odds stacked a mile high.

Now, she’s not just representing medals—she’s representing millions of women who never got a chance to dream.

“I believe every woman should get the chance to be her fullest self,” said Avani.
“Joining the Royal Rajasthan Foundation lets me give back to the communities that shaped me.”

She’s not just putting her name on a campaign. She’s showing up, speaking out, and standing shoulder-to-shoulder with women facing economic, educational, and cultural barriers.

Kumar Sangakkara Adds Star Power—and Perspective

It’s not just a “women’s issue.” When Kumar Sangakkara, the Royals’ Director of Cricket, adds his voice, it signals that this is everyone’s fight.

“Cricket is a platform,” says Sangakkara. “If we can inspire on the field, we can empower off it too.”

He’s not wrong. With massive reach and fan devotion, IPL franchises like the Royals have more cultural clout than most government campaigns.

And unlike a policy memo, Sangakkara’s message gets heard from Jodhpur to Jaipur, from stadium to smartphone.

What the Royal Rajasthan Foundation Is Actually Doing

This isn’t feel-good fluff. The RRF has been building women-focused programs with real, measurable outcomes:

  • Vocational training for rural women to achieve financial independence
  • Education support to keep girls in school
  • Community-building to change the gender conversation at the grassroots level

With Avani and Sangakkara now on board, the foundation expects a surge in awareness and reach.

Why It All Matters—Now More Than Ever

In a state where nearly 35% of women are married before 18 and where female literacy hovers around 57% (according to NFHS-5), change doesn’t come easy—or fast.

But the Royals are betting that a mix of sports influence, local trust, and authentic leadership can move the needle.

From Stadium Cheers to Social Change

So, yes—cricket is entertainment. But sometimes, it’s also evolution.

And if you’re wondering whether a shooter and a cricketer can rewrite the story of rural Rajasthan women?

Just remember: Avani Lekhara literally hit a bullseye with a spinal injury. Betting against her isn’t smart.
