Ruckus at Howrah Court: Calcutta HC Issues Contempt Notice to IPS Officer Vishal Garg, 6 Others

The Calcutta High Court has taken serious action against IPS officer Vishal Garg and six other police officers for a disturbance that happened at Howrah Sadar court in April last year.

A division bench of Justice Debangsu Basak and Justice Arindam Mukherjee said in their order that on April 24, 2024, some troubling incidents occurred at the Howrah court. The court said police entered the court premises without proper permission and used excessive force. This reportedly caused damage to the lawyers and disrupted the court’s functioning. The judges said such actions could interfere with the justice system.

Because of this, the court has decided to begin criminal contempt proceedings against the officers involved. The case will come up again on June 25, 2025.

Lawyer Jayanta Mitra, who represented the Howrah court lawyers, said that Vishal Garg was the Police Commissioner of Howrah at the time. He claimed that the police entered the court without approval under Garg’s orders. The officers involved must now appear in court in person and respond to the charges by July 25.
