Bigger Than Brezza, Cheaper Than Creta? Maruti Suzuki’s Boldest Bet Yet

Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to launch a new SUV, likely named Escudo, around the upcoming festive season.

The model, codenamed Y17, will sit between the popular Brezza and the Grand Vitara in Maruti’s expanding Arena portfolio. This move signals Maruti’s intent to strengthen its foothold in the fiercely competitive mid-size SUV segment.

For everyday buyers, this means a fresh choice that fills a gap between the compact Brezza and the larger Grand Vitara.

Unlike the initial plan for a three-row seven-seater to rival the Tata Safari and MG Hector Plus, Maruti has reimagined the Escudo as a two-row, five-seater SUV. This rethinking aims to directly challenge bestsellers like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos — vehicles that dominate India’s mid-size SUV market.

The Escudo will likely be longer than the Grand Vitara’s 4,345 mm length and offer better luggage space, possibly featuring an extended cargo area suitable for a petrol-CNG dual-cylinder option.

Maruti is also expected to provide multiple powertrain choices, including petrol, petrol-CNG, and petrol-hybrid variants.

This shows Maruti’s smart focus on fuel-efficient options that appeal to urban and semi-urban buyers who want affordability without compromising on versatility.

If all goes according to plan, this new SUV will be a major volume driver for Maruti Suzuki, potentially adding 1.5 to 2 lakh units annually across Maruti, Toyota, and export markets.

This fresh offering will help Maruti push towards its FY26 target of 5–6% growth, especially in the crowded SUV space where customers crave variety without stretching their budgets.

The Escudo will be sold through Maruti’s Arena showrooms, carving a new niche between their existing SUV lineup and Nexa’s premium offerings like the upcoming eVitara electric SUV. This positioning will allow Maruti to attract buyers who want more than a compact SUV but don’t want to jump into pricier Nexa models.

What this means for buyers

Expect a well-priced, feature-packed SUV that feels just right—not too big, not too small. It’s designed for people who want the space and style of a mid-size SUV but don’t need the third-row hassle. And with multiple fuel options, including eco-friendly hybrids and CNG, it’s tailor-made for India’s cost-conscious but increasingly eco-aware customers.

To sum it up, Maruti Suzuki’s Escudo isn’t just another SUV—it’s a smart play to keep the homegrown giant ahead in India’s toughest segment.

If you thought the mid-size SUV market was crowded, this new player promises to mix things up in style.
